Dinners in Alghero

Our days in Alghero were filled with sun, swimming and gelato. We decided to take a few of our balmy nights and headed into the old city for authentic Italian dinners.

With the sunsetting over the Med, we headed to the beach to catch the views.

We continued our walk along the marina and up the old sea walls. The views were stunning.

Along the backstreets we ran into these two stern looking felines. There were taking their guarding duty seriously. We couldn't resist stopping to take their photos.

All along the winding streets restaurants had outrageous displays of the fresh catches of the day. Some of them looked delicious. Some looked a bit scary!

We settled on a little restaurant with al fresco tables in a cobblestone piazza. We were introduced to this flat crispy bread that was everywhere in Sardinia called pane carasau. It was delicious.

We started off with a Sardinian cheese plate. Sardinia is known for Pecorino Sardo, a hard sheep's milk cheese.  I can't remember the rest on the plate, but they were all good! We also ordered a squid salad that was fabulous.

For a main course we split the traditional Sardinian Seafood Fregula. Fregula is a pasta made in Sardinia that is very similar to Israeli couscous. Ours was topped with clams, mussels, and calamari. Good thing we split it, it was a lot!

Our other dinner out in the city was at a highly recommend spot called Trattoria Lo Romani. Tripadvisor reviews were glowing. It required reservations because it's packed to the brim every night with the locals. It's a little restaurant tucked into the winding cobblestone alleyways in the heart of the city. Once again we saw those beautiful arched brick ceilings which I loved.

The owner was the sweetest Italian man who told us about how the pasta was made out by the farms where we lives.

We indulged in a little sparkling wine with dinner.

For a started we split this pasta stuffed with potato and topped with tomatoes, mint and cheese.

The suckling pig was highly recommended by every review we read. So we ordered it up. It was flavorful topped with crackling but a little too salty for even my tastes.

More calamari for a side! The restaurant was beautiful, but to be honest the reviews set our expectations a little too high. The pizza we had the first night was more memorable!

We went for a walk though the city after our big Italian meal. As we made our way back to the sea walls we saw the twinkling lights of a a gelato shop. The gelato section of our stomachs said 'feed me!'

We ended the night sampling a few more flavors before our walk along the water to our flat. Another evening well spent.
